This article covers another model of business management that's catching on with corporations today, called servant-leadership. The article is a recap of a Dateline interview with Larry Spears, the President and CEO of the Greenleaf Center, a worldwide non-profit organization headquartered in Indianapolis. It is named after Robert Greenleaf, a former AT&T executive, and Quaker, who challenged the pyramid model of business management with one based on sacrifice and service by those at the top. Though Greenleaf's inspiration came mostly from his experience in the business world, Spears says the idea of servant-leadership can be found in many religions. He asks the question: Can humility and faith be good for business? Was Jesus the ultimate CEO because he was willing to wash the feet of his servants?
I found this concept of servant-leadership to be closely linked to philosophy utilized in Good to Great on what it takes to become a Level 5 Leader and the importance of humility. This interview asks many of the same questions we discussed in class, such as: Does being humble make you appear weak? Can you be competitive with this servant-leadership approach? I would suggest taking a quick read, some of the answers may suprise you.
